Lindsay Lohan: Arrest warrant issued

An arrest warrant for Lindsay Lohan was issued by the Beverly Hills Superior Court on Friday, related to her 2007 DUI and hit-and-run case, according to People.com. While the exact nature of the charge is unknown, arrest warrants can be issued for any number of infractions, including minor administrative problems like failing to update an address. Lohan's lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, called the warrant "a misunderstanding," and said that she has been complying with the terms of her probation. On Saturday, Beverly Hills Police Lt. Mark Rosen said that the police are not ''actively looking'' for her, though if they came in contact with her, "she's subject to arrest." She is expected to attend a hearing on her case scheduled for Monday morning. The star, whose film Labor Pains opens in May, is currently serving three years' probation for the May and July, 2007 incidents, in which she was alleged to have been in possession of cocaine.

Professional wrestler Andrew "Test" Martin has passed away.

The former World Wrestling Entertainment champion, 33, was found dead at his apartment in Tampa, Florida, on Friday night.

No cause of death is known - yet.

Police say a neighbor reported that she could see into Martin's apartment through a window and that he had appeared motionless for several hours.

Police say the wrestler was dead when they arrived, but there was no indication of foul play.

A cause of death won't be determined until after an autopsy.

Glenn Estate Auction in London. Flynn primps in his tux and struts with a reasonable degree of suaveness. Until he takes a sip of champagne and spits it everywhere. He checks with Charlene over the phone. He's supposed to keep someone from getting a Ming vase -- without going over budget. He gets a call from an angry and increasingly drunk girl, Katie. Mid-auction he gives her another excuse and she says he's given 100. He repeats that and has suddenly bid higher. Charlene calls on the other line, watching the numbers escalate online, asking if he's trying to bankrupt them. A series of twitches, outbursts and accidental bids later and, in an effort to get quickly to Katie waiting in the bar, Flynn jumps all the way to 1 million pounds. Charlene hyperventilates and Flynn gets the vase. The auctioneer congratulates him on appreciating fine art. Flynn picks up the vase and promptly drops it. He picks up the Philosopher's Stone from the shards. It can turn anything it touches into gold, like arm of the other bidder's henchman. Golden fist and others come after Flynn for the stone and a sword fight ensues. They stop to admire the art mid-fight and Flynn checks his watch and goes on to win.

But at the bar, he's too late. Katie has left for the airport.

Somewhere in the Carpathian mountain range some Russian goons rappel into a castle. They find the tomb they're looking for.

Flynn returns to the Library, where Charlene is on the phone, trying to explain that Flynn wasn't authorized to make that high a bid. She starts in on him, but he doesn't want to hear it. And he's ruined his tux. It's a rental.

She takes him to the large collections annex, which goes on forever. The library is as big as they need it to be. It's holding Noah's Arc and Judson is testing the Fountain of Youth. They have another job for him, translating a manuscript, and Excaliber wants to do their weekly sword training.

Flynn goes a little cuckoo, complaining that he has no life and his best friend in a sword. Since he's been working there, he hasn't been in a relationship with a woman that lasted more than six months. Judson tells him to just think of himself as a celibate monk. That doesn't help. They think maybe he should take a vacation.

University of Bucharest, a professor lectures about Vlad the Impaler. Cheery stuff. After the lecture he's approached by a man named Sergei Kubichek, who recently resigned as security minister for the Russian government. They tell the professor they found a body -- Dracula's body. Professor Lazlo says it's a hoax, he's searched for it his entire life. He looks at one of the scrolls they brought and recognizes the Judas Chalice.

Charlene shows up at Flynn's house. Her combination speed dating-wine tasting was two streets down. She seems to have enjoyed at least half of it. He's playing on-line poker in his pajamas. She tries to get him to leave town and suggests locations, like New Orleans. But he's worried New Orleans will dump him, that he'll get his hopes up and be disappointed. She tells him to follow his dream and see where it leads him. She stumbles out (she's biking).

How will Twitter make money?

How will Twitter, the hugely popular micro-blogging service (among the tech-savvy crowd anyway), make money? That’s the polite version of the question posed today by Allen Stern over at his CenterNetworks blog. Stern writes: “As Twitter usage has grown, have they f’ed themselves out of a real, sustainable business model?”

Twitter doesn’t charge for use of the service, though there can be some costs associated with sending SMS messages (with both Twitter and users footing the bill depending on whose sending and which country they’re based). Additionally, Twitter doesn’t (yet) serve ads — and to make matters worse, many of its regular users access Twitter through third-party clients, such as Twitterific, which utilize Twitter’s own free APIs.

Stern continues:

Most of the heavy Twitter users use the service via the API and “offsite”. I actually use the Web site and refresh the page every few minutes while I am at home. How can they monetize the API usage? If a Twitter user already paid $15 for a piece of [third-party] software, would they then be willing to pay Twitter for their account? It’s like paying for mIRC and then having to pay for the use of IRC itself.

In a fun post on his own blog, Dave Winer responds by saying that there are far harder problems than this particular web 2.0 conundrum (my words not his).

When I was in college, professors used to ask questions that are much harder than the question Allen Stern asks in this piece.

The NY Times crossword puzzle is harder.

Geez, installing a new hard disk in a MacBook is harder, and as I’ve found out that’s pretty easy.

According to Winer, Twitter has a number of potential business models, all of which rely on the service acquiring a large enough user base in the first place.

Become a distributor of third-party apps and services that use Twitter and take a cut in return.
Design and sell hardware such as a cellphone with “Twitter baked in”.
Or, better still, partner with mobile device makers and carriers to offer superior Twitter integration.
And finally, sell the service to a carrier.

The first and third suggestion seem the most viable. Setting up a Twitter products and services store would be similar to Skype’s shop that sells USB phones and other products that utilize Skype’s API. And partnering with mobile carriers seems a “no brainer” and might provide a way to reduce SMS costs. Although, as Winer also points out, making Twitter more stable should be a first priority.

Buffett Sinks Billions Into Swiss Re

LONDON - The Oracle of Omaha is unlikely to have predicted this. Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffett's holding company, said Thursday that it would pour an extra $2.6 billion into Swiss Re to prop up the company's capital base after the reinsurer posted an $861.3 million loss for 2008.

The shock news sent Swiss Re's shares down 14.2%, or 4.28 Swiss francs ($3.69), to 25.88 francs ($22.30), during morning trading in Zurich. In addition to the extra cash raised from Buffett, who currently owns a 3.0% stake, Swiss Re said it would have to raise an extra 2.0 billion Swiss francs ($1.7 billion) from shareholders to re-establish a "strong level" of capital. The company said its current surplus capital was at least 1.5-2.0 billion ($1.3-$1.7 billion) Swiss francs below the minimum to keep its "AA" financial-strength rating.

Buffett's official statement was typically contrarian. "We are delighted to have this opportunity to increase our investment in Swiss Re," he said. "I am very impressed by [chief executive] Jacques Aigrain and his management team."

Swiss Re's stock performance over the past year would suggest that investors disagree. Since January 2008, when Buffett threw the company a lifeline, Swiss Re shares have fallen more than 67.0%. The company's exposure to financial products like credit-default swaps and other derivatives, which together racked up a 6.0 billion Swiss-franc ($5.2 billion) mark-to-market loss for the year, has pummeled investor confidence.

In addition to taking a voting stake in Swiss Re, Buffett promised to shoulder 20.0% of the company's property and casualty business until 2013. This helped Swiss Re handle hurricane season in 2008 slightly better than it otherwise would have. (See "Buffett Helps Swiss Re Weather Hurricane Season.")

Swiss Re spent most of 2008 buying back shares, but it suspended this program in November, after reporting a quarterly loss of 304 million Swiss francs ($262.1 million).

Buffett's love of contrarian value investing has not proven entirely successful lately. Berkshire Hathaway investments in Wells Fargo, American Express, Moody's and U.S. Bancorp are all taking a hit from the financial meltdown. (See "Has Buffett Lost His Touch?")

"Tomb Raider" Reboot Confirmed

It is now being reported that Warners Bros. Pictures and producer Dan Lin ("Sherlock Holmes," "Jonny Quest") are in early development on a reboot of the video game turned film franchise "Tomb Raider" says The Hollywood Reporter.

The rumored recasting as well seems to be a rights issue. Though Paramount previously made the two movies based on the game, the rights have since reverted to Eidos. Time Warner upped its stake to nearly 20% in Eidos in December and films rights to the property became part of that deal.

Much like the recent Batman and James Bond series, the new project will ignore the previous films and will reimagine the origins of Lara Croft, her love interest and the main villain.

As the project is an open-writing assignment, a writer and director are yet to be attached making the casting of Croft herself an unlikely event for a long time yet (sorry Megan Fox fans).

The hugely popular game series, first published in 1996, followed the daredevil archaeologist Lara Croft on a series of global missions. After four subsequent and increasingly panned sequels, the series was put in the hands of new developers who effectively 'rebooted' the series with the game "Tomb Raider: Legend". A direct sequel to that, "Tomb Raider: Underworld", hit stores in November.

Angelina Jolie, Jon Voight and Daniel Craig starred in the first film adaptation in 2001, while Jolie, Gerard Butler and Ciaran Hinds starred in the second in 2003. Despite dreadful reviews the first film scored a major $275 million in international box-office. Reviews were better though still dire for the sequel, while revenue notably sank with only a $157 million global tally.

A UFO dropped in on Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony, it was claimed last night.

News footage captured a shadowy object flashing across the sky before the new President’s speech.

The high-speed object appears to streak behind the Washington Monument and then disappear into the clouds.

The CNN clip, featuring veteran US broadcaster Wolf Blitzer, has attracted thousands of hits on video-sharing website YouTube.

UFO experts are convinced it shows an alien craft speeding behind the 555ft-high monument – but sceptics say it was a bird or a bat.

Enthusiast Nick Pope said: “We know it is not an aircraft because a strict no-fly zone was imposed over the area.

“It seems to have been going a little bit too fast for any type of bird.”

During the election run-up, UFO bloggers claimed mysterious “orbs” were spotted over an Obama rally in Chicago.

Calls for him to release all information held on UFOs attracted over 170,000 votes on his new online “Citizen Briefing Book” last week – more than any other subject.

Mr Pope said: “Despite the economic downturn and the conflict in Afghanistan, the number one topic people were pressuring the President over was UFOs. It proves this is more than a fringe issue.”

THE quartet who played at the inauguration have admitted they were miming – after recording the music two days before.

Pierce Brosnan may tell you that singing with Meryl Streep in Mama Mia was intimidating, but in his latest movie, The Greatest, that just premiered at Sundance to rave reviews, the Irish actor goes places, emotionally, he has never gone before, playing a grief-stricken father opposite Susan Sarandon.

In this exclusive interview, Brosnan talks about the challenges he had preparing for this role and the conscious decision he made not to have in family around during filming. He talked one-on-one to Paul Fischer in Park City.

Question: Did this film come to you as an actor first and then as a producer? Or were they both kind of – synchronized?

Brosnan: They came to Irish DreamTime as producing, acting. And Bo said, “Read this.” And I read it, and I thought it was wonderful, then I threw it under the bed, and I said, “I just – let it lie there.” Literally put it under the bed. I have a little house, out and away. I didn’t really want to go there, just because it was so well-founded by Shana, and the emotions of it. And then Bo kept on at me, saying, “Read it again. Better late than never, we suppose -- joining Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Palm, RIM's officially opened the BlackBerry Application Storefront to submissions, just a hair after the December launch we'd originally heard. It sounds like RIM's going to be doing more an Apple-style closed market than an Android-style free-for-all: apps will be "considered" for inclusion in the Storefront, which is scheduled to go live in March at CTIA.

The lockdown's not a big shocker considering RIM's corporate userbase, but we're can't say we're huge fans of this new trend toward closed stores. In any event, it sounds like RIM's seeing big potential for its fledging shop -- co-CEO Jim Balsillie recently told a panel that he's expecting "dozens of music apps" in the store, which he thinks will be able to capitalize on the (sigh) "birth of digital music 2.0." We're not sure exactly what Jim means -- he mostly said things like "remarkable revenue enhancement strategy" and "radical and dramatic enhancing set of opportunities" -- but we're all for shaking up the music business, so bring it on. It can't be any worse than SlotMusic.

A new year, new charges from the EU against Microsoft

Just weeks after the New Year's celebrations ended, the European Union's European Commission has issued a fresh round of accusations against Microsoft. Likely inspired by past successes which saw the EU reaping $1.4B USD (899M €) in its latest fine against Microsoft, the pair is getting ready to wage battle in the European Union's courts yet again.

The EU released a statement Friday stating, "Microsoft's tying of Internet Explorer to the Windows operating system harms competition between web browsers, undermines product innovation and ultimately reduces consumer choice."

Microsoft is currently reviewing the statement and deciding whether to fight the charges by requesting a formal hearing. It has been given an eight week deadline to reply to the charges. In the past Microsoft has had little success fighting the EU, with its appeals against fines consistently failing.

While Microsoft has diversified substantially, with revenue from internet business, the Xbox 360 gaming console, the Zune MP3 player, and more, the company's biggest business remains its operating systems. While Microsoft has tried to move away from bundling its software with the OS's to avoid being charged with anticompetitive practices, it has failed to do so with its Internet Explorer software.

It’s hard to argue the effectiveness of Microsoft's strategy. Internet Explorer maintains a relatively large lead over second place competitor Firefox, with a 59.5 percent market share in Europe compared to Firefox's 31.1 percent. While part of this is due to Microsoft's advantages over Firefox in a large business environment, much of it is simply due to the fact that the software comes with every Windows install. This practice, says the EU, while effective, is anticompetitive.

The last fine against Microsoft came in February 2008. The fine and future fines to come from the European Commission saying Microsoft willfully ignored a 2004 ruling, which ordered it to cease certain anticompetitive practices. As the result of these violations, Microsoft is under extended oversight, and now looks to be headed for even more fines.

The most recent charges were spurred by a complaint from Norway's Opera browser company. Some analysts are noting that the timing of the latest charges is rather odd, as Internet Explorer is at its lowest market share in several years. Further, while the U.S. focused on IE in antitrust charges in the late 90s, the EU has for several years declined to focus on it, instead targeting Microsoft's bundling practices in general.

While Microsoft may be a bit morose over the fact that more antitrust charges have been dropped on it, it can take comfort in that at least it is not alone. The European Commission, which practices a stricter brand of antitrust law than the U.S., has targeted Intel and even Apple with separate charges or accusations. However, those charges fall short of those leveled at Microsoft, which has proved the EU's favorite source of antitrust fine revenue over the years, being forced to pay over $2.4B USD in fines.

Golden Globe organisers have apologised for a blunder on the awards website which suggested that Anne Hathaway had won a best actress gong.

An asterisk appeared on the site next to Hathaway's name in a list of nominees - even though the Golden Globes do not take place until Sunday.

A nominee was "randomly marked as a winner" by mistake, a statement on the Golden Globes website said.

Hathaway is up for best actress in a drama for Rachel Getting Married.

"In the process of preparing for Sunday's Golden Globe Awards, a technician working on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's (HFPA) website made a mistake and a name of a nominee was randomly marked as a winner," the statement said.

"The mistake was immediately corrected."

It said it did not mean that Hathaway had won the award for her role as a recovering drug addict in the Jonathan Demme film.

Other nominees in the same category are Angelina Jolie for Changeling, Meryl Streep for Doubt, Kristin Scott Thomas for I've Loved You So Long and Kate Winslet for Revolutionary Road.

Microsoft has delayed the public release of its Windows 7 beta download due to an overwhelming demand that its servers couldn't handle.

The announcement was made late Friday afternoon in a posting at the official Windows 7 Blog. (click on image for full-sized view of Microsoft's message to downloaders.)

"Due to very heavy traffic we're seeing as a result of interest in the Windows 7 Beta, we are adding some additional infrastructure support to the Microsoft.com properties before we post the public beta," the message explains.

The post does not give a definitive time for when the Windows 7 beta will be made available again.

"We want to ensure customers have the best possible experience when downloading the beta, and I'll be posting here again soon once the beta goes live," it says.

Overwhelming Demand

Reports as early as Friday morning indicated that Microsoft's servers were being crushed by the demand for Windows 7, even before the files were initially posted. Microsoft had planned to allow only the first 2.5 million users to download the operating system. The company has indicated it would like to have the software fully tested and ready for its final release by the end of the year.

January 6, 2009 (Computerworld) Motorola Inc. is still in the midst of plans to spin off its mobile handset division in 2010, but will show off a new cell phone made from recycled plastic water bottles at the Consumer Electronics Show later this week.

The Moto W233 Renew is described by Motorola as the "world's first carbon neutral mobile phone." Because it is based on recycled plastics, Motorola said today that 20% less energy is needed to produce the phone, compared to the standard plastic process.

To further the green theme, the Renew will come to customers in a box that is reduced in size, and with brochures printed using vegetable-based inks on 100% post-consumer recycled paper.

The conservation theme carries over to the phone itself, with up to nine hours of talk time, meaning users can talk more, charge less and reduce energy usage, Motorola said. Details about pricing, availability, carriers and device specifications were not immediately available. The device was shown in a greenish-yellow skin.

Motorola will also present the Motosurf A3100, a mobile device it describes as a "touch tablet" to be used for data access over HSPA and Wi-Fi wireless networks. It runs Windows Mobile 6.1.

It also has a flip phone, the Motorola Tundra VA76r, that provides push-to-talk capabilities for workforces. The phone will run on AT&T Mobility networks. Others details on the Motosurf and Tundra were not immediately available.

Among other products, Motorola's home and networks division will show a femtocell that CES officials are honoring for innovative furniture design. The KeepMeConnected Femtocells CDMA 9100 Series is a low-cost wireless access point, but unusual because of its touch screen inside a digital picture frame. It will be available from carriers this year and will provide a voice-over-Internet soft phone, a spokesman said.

Motorola is also showing what many TV watchers have been begging for since the invention of the remote control device. The remote, to be available through IPTV carriers this year, is rechargeable and includes a feature similar to the infamous "Clapper" device, allowing a user to find it when lost.

The remote control sits in a base station powered by a wall socket or a USB connection to a set-top device. The base station provides recharging, and also has a switch that triggers an audio tone and flashing lights on the missing remote.

Motorola is also showing a home network device with a WiMax modem and a Wi-Fi router combined. Called the wi4 WiMax CPEi775, it will be available through service providers later this year, Motorola said.

Twitter accounts of 30 celebrities hacked

More than thirty celebrities and organizations - President-Elect Barack Obama, Britney Spears, Bill O’Riley, CNN anchor Rick Sanchez and Fox News - had their twitter accounts hijacked on Monday (RLSLOG is also on Twitter!). Giving the information, the microblog site said that the hacking attack led to bogus and inapt messages being posted on their accounts. In this latest security problem for Twitter, the sham messages Fox News Twitter included comments about Bill O’Reilly’s sexuality, and Britney Spears’ private parts, among others. Rick Sanchez had a posting about drugs on his account. A social-networking blog site, Twitter allows users to send status updates, or “tweets,” from cell phones, instant messaging services and Facebook, in not more than 140 characters.

The company said that its own internal support tools had been used to hack the accounts. The support tools - which are used by the company’s support team for helping users in editing e-mail addresses associated with their Twitter account and other such things - were used by the hacker to compromise the hijacked accounts. The hacking of accounts followed a nasty phishing scam on Twitter, over the weekend. According to the site, during the spam, regular Twitter users could possibly have been tricked into logging on to a page masked as the Twitter front page.

Research groups tell us a lot of interesting things, and Nielsen has begun the new year with some unexpected news from 2008. With other reports fussing over the three “next-gen” consoles, who would have thought that Sony’s PlayStation 2 would win the popularity contest? Based on data gathered between January and October 2008, Nielsen has determined that 31.7 percent of the American gamer pool was comprised of PS2 users. The Xbox 360 comes in second with 17.2 percent, followed by the Wii at 13.4 percent.

Furthermore, the research data showed the original Xbox hanging on at 9.7 percent, as the PlayStation 3 sits at 7.3 percent. Nintendo’s GameCube falls below that at 4.6 percent, leaving 16.2 percent in the “Other” category, which consists of “any other console found in the home.” This doesn’t include portable platforms on the DS or PSP. Even more impressive data from Nielsen is the fact that World of Warcraft (WoW) users average 671 minutes (over 11 hours) per week! In any given minute, “almost 1 percent (0.723 percent) of all PC gamers are playing WoW.”

#1: Truth or Dare
This is based on the game we all know. You cozy up together with some soft music, sexy lighting, and take turns telling the truth or taking a dare. Begin with each of you writing out five dares -- anything from trying on a sexy outfit to something naughty like stripping -- on separate pieces of paper. Place them in a bowl. New Mac Mini at Macworld 2009

TUAW has the most complete description yet of the new Mac mini widely rumored/expected to launch at Macworld. It'll be topped with iMac-esque black plastic instead of white, and have a lip like Time Capsule.

The lip conceals the Mac mini's optical drive slot, which is useful now since TUAW says that the new drive will be SATA, meaning it can be swapped out for a second hard drive, probably as a custom build option. The second drive is boon to the business crowd that uses Mac minis in server farms (like this one), since it not only adds more storage, but makes RAID1 mirroring easy.

No other details on specs—we're pretty interested in what processor these things will be packing—though it's looking fairly certain (as certain as these things ever look, anyway) that they'll have Nvidia's GeForce 9400m chipset from the new MacBooks in tow.

Windows 7 Leaked To The Internet Photos

A trial version of Microsoft's forthcoming Windows 7 operating system showed up on the Internet over the weekend, according to numerous blog reports.

The beta version of the OS, reportedly Windows 7, build 7000, can be downloaded from several infamous torrent sites often used to share pirated content.

Microsoft isn't planning to officially release beta copies of Windows 7 until its MSDN developers' conference in January. A final version of the OS isn't expected until late 2009 or early 2010.

Microsoft may not be overly displeased with the leak.

The company is urging partners to begin work on Windows 7 product development as soon as possible to avoid the sort of compatibility problems that plagued the launch of Windows Vista in January 2007.

Earlier this month, Intel released a pre-production version of Windows 7 drivers for graphics chipsets. The WDDM1.1 graphics driver is designed for "enabling the full Windows 7 experience," Intel said, noting that the driver is the result of ongoing collaboration with Microsoft.

Drivers allow hardware components to communicate with a computer operating system.

When Vista launched in January of last year, many hardware makers -- including Intel -- didn't have fully compatible drivers ready. The problems marked the beginning of a slew of bad press for Vista that ultimately led many businesses and consumers to reject the operating system.

To avoid a repeat of those problems, Microsoft earlier this year ordered computer and other hardware makers to begin testing their devices on Windows 7 as soon as the first beta version becomes available.

Microsoft for the first time unveiled Windows 7 features at its Los Angeles Professional Developers Conference in October and appears anxious to release the OS as soon as possible. The company has formally said that Windows 7 won't ship until early 2010, but the January release of a beta disk is the latest sign that Windows 7 could debut in late 2009.

Microsoft is hoping Windows 7, which includes native support for touch screens, will help erase memories of Vista, which has been a disappointment for the company.

So you saw the Android announcement and decided you wanted a piece of that US$10million in prize money huh? In the week since the SDK was released more than 4,300 people have joined the Android support forum posting more than 4,000 messages between them. Robert Scoble doesn't know a single developer playing with Android – perhaps Scoble doesn't hang around with many developers?

I wanted to give the SDK a good work-out so my application uses the GPS, the address book, and has a map.

The only way to judge an SDK is getting in there and writing an application that does something cool, so I'll take you through the development process for my first Android application: Where Are My Friends?

WamF shows how far away you are right now from all the people in your address book, plots you and them on a map, and draws lines between you and any friends nearby.

WamF is pretty simple but it makes use of some of the more interesting features of Android – Location Based Information (GPS etc), maps, the contacts manager, and the phone dialer. Total development time from hitting Download on the SDK page was about 14 hours (spread over two mornings and evenings). My Android development is in Windows with Eclipse using the plugin, so I will assume you're doing the same.

Before I get started here's a bit on my background. I've mentioned before that I'm a C# .NET desktop applications developer in my real life. It's been almost 10 years since I've done anything with Java and I've never done any mobile phone development. With Android I develop in Windows with Eclipse using the Android plugin.

Let's start by downloading Eclipse and unzipping it into a new folder. Then download the Android SDK and unzip that into another new folder. Open Eclipse and create a new workspace for Android development.

Install the Android Plugin by selecting Help > Software Updates > Find and Install..., and in the dialog box choose Search for new Features to install. Select New Remote Site and enter https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/. into the dialog box. Hit OK and accept all the prompts until it's installed. Restart Eclipse and you're almost ready to rock.

Religion is the largest promoter of this propaganda, for the "us and them" or "good and evil" mentality promotes this false assumption.

The reality is that we live in a society that produces Scarcity. The consequence of this scarcity is that human beings must behave in self preserving ways, even if it means they have to cheat and steal in order to get what they want. Our research has concluded that Scarcity is one of the most fundamental causes of aberrant human behavior, while also leading to complex forms of neurosis in other ways. A statistical look at drug addiction, crime and incarceration statistics, finds that poverty and unhealthy social conditions comprise the life experience of those who engage in such behavior.

Human beings are not good or bad... they are running, forever changing compositions of the life experience(s) that influences them. The "quality" of a human being ( if there was such a thing ) is directly related to the upbringing and thus belief systems they have been conditioned into.
This simple reality has been grossly overlooked and today people primitively think that competition, greed and corruption are "hardwired" elements of human behavior and, in turn, we must have prisons, police and hence a hierarchy of differential control in order for society to deal with these "tendencies". This is totally illogical and false.

Survey: people prefer Internet access to sex

Intel came up with a novel way to show how important the Internet and computing have become in the lives of Americans. In conjunction with Harris Interactive, the company conducted a survey of adults in the United States under the prosaic-enough banner “Internet Reliance in Today’s Economy.” But the first “key finding” from the study is a little more attention-grabbing. According to the study, 46 percent of women and 30 percent of men would opt to forgo sex for two weeks instead of giving up access to their precious Internet for the same period. More broadly, those surveyed said access to the Internet ranked highest among the discretionary spending items they could not live without. Cable television, dining out, shopping for clothes and gym memberships followed in declining importance.

Along similar lines, 61 percent of the women surveyed said they would rather go without TV for two weeks than lose access to the Internet for one week. Using the data as a means of pitching products fueled by Intel chips, the company said: “The survey revealed that 65 percent of adults feel they cannot live without Internet access, and even more — 71 percent — responded that it is important or very important to have Internet-enabled devices, such as laptops, netbooks and mobile Internet devices that can provide them with real-time updates on important issues including the state of the economy.” Harris Interactive polled 2,119 adults on Intel’s behalf.

Neonode AB, a wholly-owned subsidiary of US-based Neonode, Inc., has filed a petition for bankruptcy in Sweden. The company, which has focused almost all of its efforts on pushing the now aged Neonode N2 since 2004, finally caved after looking so vulnerable in late July. According to Per Bystedt, CEO and Chairman of Neonode: "For the past six months we have focused on turning the business around and solving the financial situation of Neonode AB; we continue to have great belief in our technology and believe we have a competitive product in the Neonode N2 but without sufficient funds we cannot continue operations." No word of a revamped OS. No word of hardware tweaks. Nothing that sounds to us like they really want to survive in today's high-stakes handset market. At any rate, the parent company is hoping to trudge on as a technology licensing company, with or without Mr. N2.

Since Friday, prompts for Facebook Connect have started to appear on websites across the internet, enabling those with a Facebook profile to import their profile and friends to participating sites including CitySearch and Digg.

This means Facebook fans don't have to remember another user name and password, according to an article in The Guardian detailing the scheme, and users can publish what they do on Digg, say, back to their mates on Facebook.

Obviously this saves users time and sites are keen to participate because it will drive traffic to them - Facebook has over 100 million active users. On the other hand, given the size of the beast, it would be quite easy for smaller sites to end up feeling like a Facebook satellite.

British ISPs blocking access to Wikipedia

At least six of the United Kingdom’s main Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have implemented monitoring and filtering mechanisms that are causing major problems for UK contributors on websites operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, amongst up to 1200 other websites. Some ISPs have blocked customers from accessing some Wikimedia websites including the free, online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, altogether.

The filters appear to be applied because Wikimedia sites are hosting a Scorpions album cover which some call child pornography. The Scorpions are a German rock band who have used several controversial album covers and are perhaps best known for their song, “Rock You Like a Hurricane”. The measures applied redirect traffic for a significant portion of the UK’s Internet population through six servers which can log and filter the content that is available to the end user.
